miDrive is the UK’s largest community of learner drivers. They have helped over 300,000 people right across the UK get on the road for less, whilst still become safer, more confident drivers. Through the use of innovative technology they are reducing the time it takes for learners to reach test standard.
Background & Objective
miDrive’s mobile stack needed improvement at a time when the company was looking to improve its portfolio in the lead up to raising their Series A round of funding in mid 2016, we needed to redesign their Theory Test app and ensure that learners had the extra learning materials available whilst also building a flagship product to show what miDrive can create.
There were three core components to focus on to deliver the Theory Test app:
- Solo Practice: Enabling learners to answer a set number of questions in a time frame, learners were able to view instant feedback of what the correct answer was, how much they scored along with any hints along the way.
- Head to Head: A multiplayer mode in which learners could compete against each other as a race in the first to reach 100 points. The technology behind this involved working with socket.io to receive a stream of updates to and from the server which allowed us to update the UI on where your opponent was in relation to you.
- Hazard Perception: This mode enabled learners to practice from 26 videos provided by the DVLA, short 2 minute clips played and the learners needed to tap the screen when they saw a hazard happening, as a replica to the actual theory test that they would do in a physical test center. This feature involved working with in-app purchases through the Apple and Google Play store.
Solution & Results
We worked closely with miDrive to revamp the Theory Test for both iOS & Android platforms making them the leading apps in the learning to drive sector. From the ground up we worked with miDrive to rebuild both platforms using native languages, this vastly improved the performance and general usability of the apps. The iOS app has been featured on the App Store throughout 2016, and has been sitting in the UK education featured list since release in early 2016. We firmly believe that miDrive now have the best Theory Test application available on the App Stores.
