Introduction
In today's digital landscape, delivering exceptional user experiences (UX) is paramount to the success of products and features. As the lead UX designer at Airbyte UX Design Studio, we spearheaded a comprehensive study to delve into the perceptions and challenges surrounding UX and UX designers within product teams and organisations. By engaging professionals at all levels of seniority, including UX designers, product leads, product designers, product managers, and product owners, we aimed to gain valuable insights into the intricate world of UX design.
Perception and Prioritisation - Balancing Aesthetics and In-Depth UX Design
Perception and prioritisation play a vital role in shaping product teams' approaches. Through our research, we found that product teams and businesses view both in-depth UX design and general aesthetics as important. However, UX design was slightly more highly regarded, with approximately 60% of participants considering it a higher priority compared to aesthetics.

This emphasis on UX design stems from its direct impact on user satisfaction, engagement, and long-term success. Interestingly, product managers exhibited a greater emphasis on UX design than product designers, with a perceived importance that was 15% higher. This finding highlights the critical role product managers play in understanding the strategic value of UX design and its alignment with business goals.
Collaboration and Cross-Functional Dynamics
Successful product development heavily relies on collaboration between tech teams and UX designers. Our study uncovered positive overall collaboration between these teams, though with varying perspectives. Designers tended to perceive collaboration more favourably than product managers and product leads. This finding suggests that UX designers actively seek collaboration, recognising the value of multidisciplinary teamwork in creating cohesive and impactful user experiences.

Effective collaboration not only enhances the design process but also fosters better understanding and integration of user-centric design principles throughout the product development lifecycle. It is imperative to establish open channels of communication and trust, allowing for the seamless exchange of ideas and collective problem-solving.
"In a word, it's people. Good UX designers tie people together and foster communicative and collaborative environments. Building a good relationship with engineering teams is crucial, based on trust and understanding."
The Crucial Role of UX Designers in Product Success
UX designers emerged as key contributors to the success of new product features. Participants, on average, overwhelmingly rated the importance of UX designers above 9 out of 10, recognising their instrumental role in shaping user satisfaction and driving business KPIs. As UX designers, our ability to advocate for best design practices, connect them with business needs and priorities, and ensure accessible UX is paramount to achieving these outcomes.

Through our expertise in user research, information architecture, interaction design, and usability testing, we bridge the gap between user expectations and product functionality. Our focus on designing intuitive and seamless experiences enables users to accomplish their goals effortlessly, enhancing their overall satisfaction and loyalty to the product.
"One of the most impactful aspects of a UX designer's job is improving customer satisfaction with a product or feature, which directly impacts the KPIs of a company."
User Research - Bridging the Gap in Product Development
User research serves as a critical foundation for effective product development. Our study revealed that user research is currently conducted only about half the time during the initial stages of new product or feature development. This finding presents an opportunity for organisations to enhance their integration of user research practices, allowing for more informed decision-making and better alignment with user needs.

By engaging users early in the design process, UX designers gain valuable insights into their preferences, pain points, and behaviours. This knowledge helps us shape products that truly resonate with users and provide solutions that surpass their expectations. Integrating user research as a continuous and iterative process enables organisations to create user-centric products and foster a culture of empathy and understanding.
"Being the voice of the users, providing business and technical counterparts with context and content to generate valuable products is a core responsibility of a UX designer."
Understanding the Role and Responsibilities of UX Designers
The multifaceted nature of UX design often poses challenges in comprehending the true scope of the role and responsibilities of UX designers. However, our research showed that members of product teams generally have a medium confidence in their understanding of the UX designer's role. As UX designers, our role extends beyond creating visually appealing interfaces.

We are the advocates for users, working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure user needs are met while aligning design decisions with business objectives. By integrating UX design principles and methodologies, we facilitate seamless and meaningful interactions, simplify complex processes, and contribute to the overall success of the product.
Biggest Challenges Faced by UX Designers
Within product teams, UX designers encounter various challenges. Chief among these challenges is limited resources and support, as identified by over 80% of participants. Adequate resources, such as time, budget, and tools, are crucial for conducting user research, prototyping, and iterating designs. Additionally, approximately 40% cited issues related to communication and understanding, while nearly the same percentage faced conflicting priorities. Effective communication is essential for aligning stakeholders, managing expectations, and ensuring a shared understanding of user needs and design decisions. UX designers must navigate these challenges by advocating for the necessary resources, fostering open communication channels, and educating stakeholders about the value and impact of UX design.

The Significance of Skill and Experience Level in UX Designers
The study revealed unanimous agreement among participants on the high importance of the skill and experience level of UX designers in achieving successful product development outcomes. As UX designers, our ability to think creatively, employ fact-based decision-making informed by user needs and business requirements, and lead discovery and user validation processes directly contributes to product excellence. Experience plays a vital role in understanding design patterns, user behavior, and industry trends, enabling UX designers to make informed design decisions and anticipate potential user pain points. Continual professional growth and staying abreast of emerging design methodologies and technologies are imperative to deliver innovative and delightful experiences to users.
"Fact-based decision-making informed by user needs and business requirements is a key aspect of being a good UX designer."
Team Size and Organisational Scale
Understanding the context of the surveyed organisations is crucial. On average, product teams consisted of approximately three UX designers, indicating the importance placed on having dedicated UX expertise. Moreover, the average company size of participants ranged between 51 and 200 employees, suggesting that organisations of various scales recognise the value of UX design in their product development endeavours. However, the findings also indicate that organisations should consider scaling their UX teams based on the complexity and scope of their products to ensure adequate UX coverage and expertise.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this comprehensive study provides valuable insights into the perceptions and challenges surrounding UX and UX designers within product teams and organisations. The findings underscore the critical role of UX design in driving the success of products and features, highlighting its importance in achieving user satisfaction, engagement, and long-term business goals. Effective collaboration between tech teams and UX designers is crucial for integrating user-centric design principles and fostering better understanding among stakeholders. Additionally, the study emphasises the need for organisations to prioritise user research, as it serves as a foundational element in creating user-centered products. Furthermore, the study highlights the significance of skilled and experienced UX designers in making informed design decisions and leading discovery and validation processes. By addressing the challenges of limited resources, communication gaps, and conflicting priorities, organizations can better support UX designers and enhance the overall product development process. Ultimately, this study reaffirms the pivotal role of UX designers in shaping exceptional user experiences and urges organisations to recognise the value of UX design in achieving business success.
